Temporary Business and Employment Visas (Subclass 457)

With Work Allowance:

This visa is for Australian business people, and their employees who want to come temporarily to Australia and work. If you are a skilled person and you do not have an employer in Australia, you should consider a permanent visa under the Skilled Migration Program.

The Subclass 457 visa can be granted either on shore in Australia, or overseas, regardless of where it is applied for. This is an exception to make it easier for employers and visa applicants which was announced in April 2005.

To apply for a temporary visa to allow work in Australia for 3 months to 4 years, you must have an Australian sponsoring employer. If you are an employer, you must first apply to the Australian government for sponsorship approval. See Employer Sponsorship for Temporary Business Visa 457.

(Some Australian visas allow work, others only allow short visits for conferences or meetings. If you plan to work here, make sure you apply for a visa with "work provision" - one that will allow you to work. In Australia we do not have a separate "Work Permit" arrangement. Working provision is included in your visa, stamped in your passport.)
